As I perceive it, the bigger picture is beyond comprehension. All we are able to do as humans is look at what has occurred in the past, what is currently happening now-in the present, and what could potentially happen in the future.
My name is Sophia and I am currently enrolled in Unity College, American’s Environmental College, which is located in Unity, Maine. http://www.unity.edu/.
I’ve spent my entire life in Maine and I absolutely adore it here. Nature has always been my escape goat because no matter what falls through in life, nature is still there, constant and thriving.
Over the last few years, as much as I’ve tried to fight it, I have grown up. I can no longer go through life believing that everything is equal and fair, that bad or evil things do not occur, or that the world is not changing. Truth is: the world is changing. Quickly and drastically-especially in terms of humans, our choices, and the direct and indirect effects that they had/have on this beautiful planet.
My blog will be focusing on an issue that started in the United States around 2006, but hasn't received as much recognition as I believe it should: the disappearance of honey bees. Honey bees play an extremely vital role in our lives. Although I think that this little fuzzy creature is often times overlooked, and even at times considered as more of a pest, without honey bees, the United States would loose 1/3 of their pollinated crops ranging from apples to blueberries to almonds and avocados. Also, the lose of honey bees will directly impact the lives of our beloved farmers, as they would lose roughly $15 billion a year in crops.
So what exactly is going on with the honey bees? Are humans to blame for the disappearance of honey bees? Is this issue out of our control? Is it our moral and ethical right to recognize this issue and act upon it as soon as possible? As you follow my blog, I plan to answer these questions and much more. My goal for this blog is not only to spread the word of this harsh reality, but to enlighten you with an aspect of life which I consider to be part of the bigger picture.
